Top 5 Badass Women of Anime – Lucy/Nyu!

It took five weeks to get here, but finally we’re at lady number 1! I had to think so hard to decide on all of the girls on list, and am happy with the choices I made. The number one slot was a hard choice, but I had her picked from the beginning. So ranking at #1 is Lucy from Elfen Lied.

Elfen Lied was my first bloody/violent anime. When I started watching it my eyes were wide due to this cute, naked girl that was ripping peoples heads off (Literally). As the first episode unfolded and I watched Lucy annihilate everyone she came across, I fell in love with her character.

All kinds of questions were filling my head about her. When I figured out her what exactly her weapons were (which didn’t take long) I realized how badass she was. Lucy had been isolated for so long that she has regained her passionate hate for humans, and had no qualms about killing them either. I was so shocked by the violence in the anime that I didn’t even begin to realize how awesome Elfen Lied was, and how Awesome the Lucy/Nyu character was.

The reasons why I love Lucy best are infinite, but the simple explanation is that she fills all of the characteristics it takes for me love an anime girl. First is her hair. I love anime girls with pretty pink hair, as I have stated multiple times. I don’t know why, but characters with pink hair just tickle my fancy, and if you add it ears of any kind, it just gets better. (Well, horns in this case)

Another reason is her duel personality. I believe I have mentioned that before as well. I love characters that have two sides to them. When I found out that badass Lucy had a cute, sweet side name Nyu, I was nearly dieing of happiness. Characters with two sides to them are just cool to me, and Lucy is my favorite one out of them all. And as I just love the hell out of cute things, finding out that someone so badass could be so cute made squeal with delight. Nyu is cute…seriously cute, unbelievably cute. And when Lucy is out she is seriously badass.

Fight scenes are of course a requirement for badass girls. If the fight scenes aren’t good, then they don’t make the list. Lucy’s fight scenes are amazing. Like in the first episode, when she beats the crap out of Bando. She let him have it in so many different ways that he didn’t know what was going on. Of course, he couldn’t see her pretty little vectors, but it’s safe to say that she beat the sh*t out of him. He deserved it too, cause I really hate that guy, and as he as no problems with killing or hurting people, it was time he got his. He was an idiot for not listening and staying out her radius, so it was his own fault he lost a couple of limbs.

I also enjoy how Lucy uses simple things such as pens for weapons, and how she uses nearby bodies for a shield.

Other mentionable fight scenes are the one’s between Lucy and Nana, and the one at the end when Lucy takes on everyone in the vicinity and goes out a hero.

The first fight between Lucy and Nana was amazing. A fight in broad daylight between two diclonius using weapons that no one else can see was one of the best ideas ever. I was grossed out and entranced at the same time. I had never seen limbs go flying through the air before. Though Nana was supposed to be at the advantage in the fight, Lucy still managed to take her down. If Nana had been smart and followed her orders, she wouldn’t have been so badly injured. These people just didn’t seem to realize how vicious Lucy really is.

Even though Lucy is a vicious killer, I can’t place any of the blame on her for turning out that way. Granted, it was partially her choice, but if she had been shown more kindness in the past, it might have been different. The only person who ever showed her true kindness was Kohta, and it was something Lucy had never known. She fell for Kohta when they were young, but misunderstood the situation between Kohta and his sister. Lucy didn’t realize she felt jealous and just wanted the other girl out of the picture, so she got rid of her. I can’t blame Lucy for being naive and doing something that was in her true nature. So Lucy just gets more points for her traumatic past.

Lucy put up a really big front through out the entire anime, until toward the end. I knew all along how truly sad and guilty she felt, which is why she tried her hardest to avoid contact with Kohta. She subconsciously had Nyu come out whenever she was near Kohta because she felt to guilty for killing his family, and even more guilty that he couldn’t even remember it and showed her such kindness. It was obvious how much she still loved him through her avoiding him and her constant desire to hide her killing sprees from him. She tried so hard to make up for the past in her own way, and accomplished it somewhat in the end.

And if I had been locked up in a facility that liked to do experiments on me, I’d be in a blind rage as well. Those idiots shouldn’t have captured her if they couldn’t keep her locked up, she reeked so much havoc and killed so many of their guys.

Lucy also held her own against Mariko. Four vectors vs twenty-six vectors is not a fair fight at all, so it if Lucy wasn’t truly badass she would have been killed off almost instantly.

I truly admired how Lucy defended Kohta in the end, out of love as much as guilt. All along Lucy only wanted someone who would accept her and care for her. Kohta always did, even after discovering the truth about the past and what Lucy did to his family.

I was a little upset when Nyu decided that she could just go and cut off all of Lucy’s hair (It feels funny talking about two people in the same body. O.O). I know Nyu did it because she too, was sorry for what had happened to Kohta and wanted to comfort him….But come on, Lucy looked so good with that long pink hair! She looked good with short hair too, but I just loved it long more. T.T

Lucy managed to steal my heart so completely within the first episode, that I was annoyed by a lot of the other characters. Yuka got on my nerves to no end, because her annoying fits of immature and wrongful jealousy took away from my Lucy/Nyu screen time. I wanted to hit Yuka most of the time.

Nyu is supposed to be an manifestation of Lucy’s good side, but does Lucy’s good side enjoy grabbing boobs? Cause Nyu sure does, and it always made me laugh my ass off. XD

The picture above just describes completely why Lucy is my #1 badass anime girl. Look at her, in all of her perfect glory. (With a gun, no less ^.^)

I intended to make this post a lot longer, but I’m tired from work and life, so it’s coming to an early close. I might update it a bit more in the future, but who knows. XD

So in short, reasons why Lucy is #1 are…

  • Pink Hair
  • Cute Horns
  • Split Personality
  • Sad Past
  • Wicked Fighting Skills
  • Boob Groping Abilities
  • Living her life the only way she knew
  • Going out a hero
  • Loving Kohta irrevocably, even though he’s an idiot.
  • Cuteness
  • Committing so many violent acts that there isn’t a number high enough…

I’m gonna end the list now, cause it will just get longer and longer. I have far too many reasons floating around in my head for why Lucy is amazing and made #1. I probably didn’t do her much justice in this post, due to tiredness, but there it is! The last girl on the Badass Women of Anime countdown!

Love her or Lucy will punish you!!!! XD

Side Note – I really have to mention the amazing opening song to Elfen Lied. The song Lillium is one of the most beautiful openings I’ve ever heard, it’s very touching. Due to a blonde moment, I totally forgot to put on my anime openings list. *Head Desk*

I’ll be beginning another Top 5 next week! XD Look forward to it!

Top 5 Badass Women of Anime – Maka

MAHAHA! Yes, time for the next lady on the list! Ranking in spot #3, Maka from Soul Eater! Yes the lovely, intelligent, breathtaking and sometimes emo, Maka. I love love love love love love love this girl, Ok?! Did I get my point across?! I FLIPPIN LOVE HER! *Glomps Maka*

Scandalous, isn’t she?! In all of her epic glory…*Stares* Yesh, she is one wicked anime girl, there is no way to argue with that!

Maka is purely amazing. When I began watching Soul Eater, I was a little like WTF?! but then began laughing so frickin’ hard that I couldn’t stop. Maka became my favorite character the moment she was introduced. I know it’s a little presumptuous to pick your favorite character before you’ve seen them all, but I just knew I would love her best. I wasn’t wrong either, though the other characters are awesome as well, Maka just owned them all.

The list of reasons as to why I love Maka is extremely long, packed with immense fangirl love. I’m just gonna stick with the keypoints though, as I am sure no one is really interested in my ranting…

What makes an anime girl badass is her characteristics, fighting style, personality and ability to take it like a man. This is the list compiled in my head and Maka fits every single one of those descriptions.

The first thing that drew me in about Maka was her scythe (Better known as Soul, Lol). A really original weapon and not really seen much in anime. I’ve definitely never seen a girl wield one. Maka does though, and she does it well. It’s almost like the scythe was created to be her weapon. She has excellent skills when handling it and does not falter when under attack.

Her determination is another great point. You hit her, she gets back up, kick her, she gets back up. Nothing is going to hold her down. Whether it comes to fighting, strategy, or studying (I find Maka to be oddly similar to Hermione, only animated XD) she does not give up, does not back down and is determined to acomplish everything in her power to win.

Maka is a play by the rules kind of fighter, but she knows how to break them and doesn’t hesitate to do so. She can be cocky, arrogant, innocent and sweet. She pulls of everything she does immense willpower. She can also be emo at times, like when Soul got hurt by Chrona. I think being able to show a weak side is very important to a character, and in Maka’s case fear and weakness only fuels the fire. She turns everything that could be used against her into strength.

Maka is also extremely caring of those around her, particularly Soul. I know this is understandable as they are partners, but I think it’s a bond that goes deeper than that. Doing whatever it takes to protect someone precious to you sounds more like lovers than partners to me. ^.^ Then again, this could be my wishful thinking. But hey, as an avid fangirl you have to find the romance somewhere!

Maka’s fight scenes are intense, her moves are wicked and she knows how to use teamwork in order to achieve the goals set before her. All of the fight scenes in  Soul Eater are good, but Maka’s are the best out of them all. She fights seriously, unlike Black Star who just fights to make me laugh. XD

Everytime Maka and Soul use the “Resonance of Souls” technique, I get blown away by the sheer capacity of power they can use. The way the scythe grows is awesome. It’s like they just click the “Power Up” button and end up PWNING everyone else. Especially in recent episodes. With Maka’s will to get stronger and Soul’s inner-demon problems, they end up benefiting. In the latest episode when Maka fights Chrona for a second time we get to see how truly badass she really is. She wasn’t messing around with the stupid crap, instead she went directly for hand to hand combat and ended up landing some pretty damaging blows. (Looking completely frickin’ cool in the process)

Another strong point for Maka is her intelligence. She can keep a cool head and calculate what is best to do in a situation (most of the time). I really love the filler episode with the exams, cause we got to see Maka flaunt her skills a bit. She is one of the most level headed charaters in Soul Eater.

No matter how many times I look, she is still frickin’ EPIC!

Gah, I made myself want to watch Soul Eater again. You’d thinking watching all of the released episode twice would be fine, but I just can’t get enough of Maka and the rest. (Death the Kid is pure frickin’ genius as well) Maka is just too cute, a school girl outfit and pigtails…What more does one need?

We’re nearing the end of this top 5 countdown! Look forward to girl #2 next week, cause after that there is only one more left! Then I’m gonna have to find another Top 5 to do. XD

Top 5 Badass Women of Anime – Sakura, Shippuden Style!

Top 5 Badass Women of Anime – Sango

I’ve begun another top five! Woot! This one is a bit more difficult than the last. There aren’t a lot of girls that know how to hold their own in anime, But I love the ones that do!

So ranking at #5 on the countdown is Sango, from Inuyasha.

I had about a five minute debate on whether to pick Sango or Kagome. Sango won in the end. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an avid Kagome fangirl, but Sango does close combat fighting. Almost all the other girls in Inuyasha fight from afar, with arrows, mirrors, or riding on top of feathers.

So Sango won.

I love that Sango’s fighting style is purely original. Her weapon isn’t commonly used and she wields it well. And honestly, who wouldn’t be scared of a huge boomerang made out of demon hide? Ok? I know I would. If Sango came at me pissed I would run the hell away. ^.^

Sango has a very good personality. Sweet, caring, independent, vicious when need be. She also shows the affections of a sister to Kagome, and a love to Miroku.

Sango is one of the few women in Inuyasha that can hold her own while fighting. She doesn’t expect anyone to come to her rescue nor fall into helpless situations. Someone attacks her, she attacks back, end of story. And she’s pretty too. xD

Another great thing about Sango’s fighting scenes is her outfit change. She has enough common sense to change into armor before facing down vicious demons. She doesn’t stay in her usual outfit and ruin it, like you see in animes such as Ikki Tousen. But Inuyasha doesn’t contain as much fanservice as those animes, it’s more plot driven.

Sango can fight with a her boomerang, her katana and a mass amount of other demon exterminator items. She has a blade hidden in the sleeve of her outfit, and uses it at times when can not access her other weapons.

Unlike a lot of men in anime, Sango knows when to admit defeat, when it’s necessary to retreat and when to fight back. This could be due to training, or just common sense but she doesn’t let her pride get in her way duruing battle, as a lot of other anime characters do. *Cough* Inuyasha * Cough*

Another great thing about Sango is that she doesn’t use generic fighting lines like, “I’m going to destroy you”, “This will be the final blow,” and “You’re finished!”. But I’ve never come across a fighting anime girl that said such things, It’s the men that say it, the men I tell you!

Sango doesn’t waste much time with conversation in battle unless there is something important she needs to know. Meaning, that she doesn’t stand there wasting five minutes of a perfectly good episode talking about how much she’s gonna kick the other guy’s ass. This is why I prefer women battles in anime to those of men. Unless of course, you get one of those girls who is almost defeated and starts whimpering…cause that is just annoying.

Another great thing about Sango and anime women in general is that they aren’t afraid to admit to their weaknesses. They have a soft side that vanity and pride do not get in the way of.

And Sango’s biggest soft spot is her little brother, Kohaku.

In the anime he is used as Naraku’s pawn and has no free will nor memories of his own. Naraku and Kagura often use Kohaku against Sango in battle rendering her unable to fight at times, and making her fight with full force at others.

At one point Sango resolves to take Kohaku’s life, as well as her own, to free him from his entrapment. Something a true warrior would do, ending the suffering of one they love and then following them to the afterlife.

All in all, Sango ranks at five because she is a well-trained fighter with a great personality. She can keep control of her emotions at the important times and let the go freely when she feels the need too.

She is one of my favorite badass anime women, from a classic anime viewed in my noob days in the anime world. She ranks at five because I appreciate her, but others more so. But I knew she would have to be somewhere on the list. xD
